Lovely condition, drum-mounted on board, original full hand-coloring. Framed. Line engraving derived from the portrait done by “Alexander Campbell” with facial elements after the  Nuremberg version of the print. This enjoys the independent addition of battle flags placed within the image to flank the portrait.

With captions in English and French: “George Washington Eqer General and Commander en Chief of the Continental Army in America . . . d’Apres l’Original de Champbell [sic] Peintre de Williambourg Capitale de la Virginie.” Likely published in Paris, ca. 1777 to 1780. 1 p. 7.75 x 11.75 in. in a wooden frame 10 x 14.5 in.

Winterthur catalogs their copy, noting that “there is no record of a painter or draughtsman by the name of Alexander Campbell in Williamsburg at this time. Though the image is here credited as ‘drawn from life’, Washington himself wrote otherwise while complimenting the print: ‘Mr. Campbell, whom I never saw to my knowledge, has made a very formidable figure of the Commander-in-Chief, giving him a sufficient portion of terror in his countenance.’”

Provenance: In the famed collection of 18th and early 19th century works assembled by Zachary T. Hollingsworth (1848-1925); upon his death in 1925 bequeathed it to his son Valentine, who upon his death in 1942, bequeathed it to his son Mark Hollingsworth.
